U.S. Mint

The United States Mint is the primary production site for circulating coin for the United States to carry out its trade and commerce. The U.S. Mint was formed by Congress with the passing of the Coinage Act of 1792. Per the terms of the Coinage Act, the first Mint building was in Philadelphia which, at the time, was the capital of the United States. It was the first building of the Republic raised under the Constitution. Today, the Mint is headquartered in Washington, D.C. and operates mint facilities in Philadelphia, Denver, San Francisco, West Point, New York, Fort Knox, Kentucky. The 3 major mints of the U.S. are Philadelphia, Denver and San Francisco.

Philadelphia is the leading mint facility in the United States. It is one of four active coin producing mints. First built in 1792 when Philadelphia was still the capital of the United States. The Philadelphia mint began operations in 1793. Coins minted at Philadelphia had no mark until 1980, with the exception of the Susan B. Anthony Dollar and the war time Jefferson Nickel.

In 1980, a “P” mark was added for those coins that were minted in Philadelphia.

Denver started in 1863 as a local assay office after gold was discovered in that area. By the turn of the century the office was bringing in over $5 million dollars in annual gold and silver deposits. 1906 the mint opened a new Denver branch producing its own working dies and as well as working dies for other mints. “D” is Denver’s mint mark and strikes coinage only for circulation with the exception of the $10 dollar 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Commemorative that the Denver mint struck along with 3 other mints.

The San Francisco mint opened in 1854 to serve the gold fields of the California Gold Rush. It quickly out grew its facility and moved to a new building in 1874. This building survived the great earthquake of 1906 and served until 1937. The present facility was opened and then closed in 1955, then reopened a decade later during the coin shortage of the mid 60’s. In 1968 it took over most proof coinage production for Philadelphia and since 1975 it has only been in use solely for proff coinage with the exception of the Anthony Dollar. The San Francisco’s mint mark is a “S’ and a feature on every coin minted by them.

Silver Certificates

Silver certificates are a type of representative money printed from 1878 to 1964 in the United States as a part of its circulation of paper currency. Silver certificates were produced as a reply to citizens that were angered by the Fourth Coinage Act. The fourth coinage act had place the United States on a gold standard demonetizing silver, stopping western mining interest and citizens who were wanting silver in circulation. Because of so many citizens were angered the Fourth Coinage Act is also known as the “Crime of 73”. Silver certificates were originally redeemable on in Federal Reserve notes and are thus outdated but, are still suitable legal tender.

There are 2 features that make a distinction between a Silver Certificate and regular currency; the seal and its serial numbers. On many of the first Silver Certificates issued their seals were red, brown, or blue. It was not until the 1899 series for the $1, $2, and $5 denominations that the seal and number colors were officially and permanently changed to blue. During World War II the government issued 1935a Silver Certificates with a brown seal for Hawaii distribution and 1935a certificates with a yellow seal for North Africa distribution. The idea was that if these areas fell into enemy hands during the war, the money could easily be identified and cancelled so as to prevent large monetary losses.

The obligation of a certificate states how much of a specific article of trade the government of a country will “pay to the bearer.” On most large-size Silver Certificates, the obligation reads: “This certifies that there have/has been deposited in the Treasury of the United States of America (number) silver dollar(s) payable to the bearer on demand.” On small-sized Silver Certificates beginning with Series 1934, in order to denote current location of deposit, it was changed to read: “This certifies that there is on deposit in the Treasury of the United States of America (number) dollar(s) in silver payable to the bearer on demand.”

1856 O Seated Liberty Silver Half Dollar

This 1856 O Seated Liberty half dollar is an American silver coin. This silver used to make this coin was not commonly used after the 19^th century, and is 90% pure silver. Designed by Christian Gobrecht, the Seated Liberty image is depicted holding a shield, and pole with a liberty cap at the top.

The image on the other side of the coin is of an eagle with a shield very similar to that of the Seated Liberty. This design represents American freedom during the time period, a characteristic of the country that few other countries could share. The coins were no longer minted after 1891, and they are a true symbol of American patriotism during the Civil War era.

1918 Standing Liberty Quarter Dollar

Sterling Silver Claddagh Ring

The Claddagh ring is a traditional Irish ring given as a gift of love as a wedding ring. The ring was first produced in the 17th century during the reign of Queen Mary II. The design and customs that the ring originate from is the Irish fishing village of Claddagh.
A Claddagh ring has very distinct features including two hands holding a heart usually with a crown resting on the heart. The features of this ring offer symbolisms of the qualities of true love; love (the heart), friendship (the hands) and loyalty (the crown). When the Claddagh ring is given to the bride during the wedding ceremony the presentation of the ring is usually follow by these words, "With this crown, I give my loyalty, with these hands, I offer my service, with this heart, I give you mine".  The Claddagh ring is also used is to convey the wearer’s availability or lack of. Originally called a inline thin diamond bracelet, these bracelets are distinct in their symmetrical pattern of diamonds around the piece. In 1981 they change names after one of the greatest world number one of women’s  tennis and 18 time Grand Slam champion, accidently broke her bracelet during a match at the US Open. The match was delayed so Evert could recover the precious diamonds from the court and this accident later became the “Tennis Bracelet” incident. 1866 3 Cent Nickel

TomsCoinWorld is honored to have this amazing piece of American History. This 1866 3 Cent Nickel was minted in 1865 to replace the 3 Cent Silver piece as it was bigger, but still the equivalent of the silver piece. This coin is made of 75% copper and 25% nickel. The coin features a Liberty head on the obverse side and the Roman numeral “III” on the reverse. The 3 Cent Nickel was, by the Treasury, intended to be permanent issue only a temporary measure until the war time hoarding during the Civil War ended. Production of the coin continued until 1889, 16 years after the 3 cent silver’s production stopped.

Hummel Porcelain Figurines

In Massing, Bavaria, Berta Hummel was born May 21, 1909. Hummel came to love drawing and went to Munich in 1927 to attend the Academy of Applied Arts. She graduated in 1931. After she graduated she became a nun at the Franciscan Convent of Siessen in Bad Saulgau. Hummel spent her spare time painting pictures of children, which were made into postcards. Franz Goebel, the owner of a porcelain company saw her postcards and asked the covent to allow him to make figurines based on Hummel’s artwork.

 At the age of 37, Hummel died of tuberculosis. Goebel and his company still continue to create figurines from her art. Since Hummel’s drawings are all 2 dimensional the sculptor must imagine what the drawings would look like 3 dimensional and put unseen details into the clay model but still stick to Hummels style consistently. Since, Hummel’s passing, the finished model done by Goebel’s company must be presented to her family and to the artistic board at the Convent of Siessen before it is produced of the public.

About Diamonds

Another factor that describes the diamond is the color. The color of the stone is affected by the chemical imperfection of the diamond. The different colors of diamonds are, white, steel, gray, blue, yellow, orange, red and pretty much any color of the rainbow. The internal impurities, structural defects cause the different colors, and pure clear diamonds don’t have these imperfections.

Another factor that goes into describing the diamond is the clarity. There are a variety of different things that help decide the degree of clarity. One thing that goes into the degree of clarity is the inclusions of the diamond. The different types of inclusion are clouds, feathers knots, and things like that. Another thing that goes into degree of clarity are the blemishes such as polish lines, scratches, nicks, pits, chips and more. The grading considerations include the size of the blemishes or inclusions, the number of blemishes or inclusions, and the position of the blemishes or inclusions on the diamond. The higher the number means the less clear it is.
